A walkthrough tasting with special guest Giovanna Garesio from Garesio. Giovanna, the daughter of winery's founders, took charge of the family winery 7 years ago. She has steered the winery towards success through a focus on commercial growth and a passion for winemaking. Garesio's wines are becoming increasingly well known in the wine industry due to their high quality, thanks also to the commitment of the winery to sustainability and traditional winemaking practices.

BACKGROUND
Founded by Giuseppe and Ornella Garesio, the winery is currently overseen by their daughter, Giovanna Garesio. Since 2016, she has collaborated with Gianluca Colombo as a winemaking consultant, and starting with the 2018 vintage, Federico Zagami has served as the full-time winemaker.

The Garesio family has been intensifying their winemaking efforts since 2010, acquiring land in notable wine regions such as Serralunga d'Alba in the heart of Barolo, Incisa Scapaccino, Castelnuovo Calcea in Monferrato, where they have Barbera vineyards and Perletto in Alta Langa. Each plot of land has its own identity and development. Garesio's passion has evolved over the years, becoming a continuous search for the best and most suited places for wine production.
In 2013, the acquisition of two cru vineyards, 'Ceretta' and 'Gianetto,' marked a significant milestone for the Garesio family, with their cellar strategically nestled between these two esteemed sites. These vineyards are on ancient soils, formed around 15 million years ago, characterized by fine grey marl with a notable high concentration of limestone, sandstone, sand, and Sant' Agata marl. This terroir is renowned for being among the oldest in the region, tracing back to the Lequio formation (Helvetian). The geological composition is responsible for producing intensely brick-colored wines that boast a robust structure and thick, enveloping tannins. Yet, it's the unique expositions and elevations of these vineyards, along with the predominance of sandy soils, that infuse the Barolos with a softer and more balanced profile. The Garesio Serralunga d'Alba Barolo is made exclusively from 100% Nebbiolo grapes harvested from the Cerretta and Gianetto crus.

In their approach to viticulture, the family strongly emphasizes respecting the land and sustainable practices. They manage their vineyards with minimal interventions, focusing on environmental consciousness. Their dedication extends to organic farming for Nebbiolo grapes, while their other vineyards are managed according to sustainable viticulture practices, for Garesio quality starts in the vineyards.
When it comes to winemaking, the Garesio family aims to produce wines that genuinely reflect the region's essence, prioritizing approachability and purity. They balance traditional methods with the latest technology to preserve the wines' varietal characteristics. This includes a preference for traditional fermentation, extended maceration in steel barrels, and a delicate extraction process, all tailored to enhance the unique characteristics of each vintage.
