BACKGROUND

In the heart of the historic Barrio de La Estación in Haro stands Bodegas Muga. Founded in 1932 by the couple Isaac Muga and Aurora Caño, this family-run winery blends traditional and innovative wine-making techniques.

Muga's vineyards thrive under a mix of Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Continental climates. The vineyards are located on the foot of the Montes Obarenses range within the sub-region of Rioja Alta. This terroir is the perfect spot for growing various grapes. Dominated by Tempranillo vines, the estate also has plots of Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano, among others, which add structure and complexity to the red wines. Alongside these, Viura and Malvasia are two white varieties Muga cultivates for the whites.

The Muga family, regarded as pivotal figures in Spanish wine history, emphasize their commitment to quality and tradition. Every step, from barrel-making to racking, is performed in the old ways. Muga is the only estate in the region that makes its own barrels. They are crafted on-site by their in-house master Cooper and team. Racking is done by gravity, while candlelight inspections ensure natural clarity.
